LOCAL NEW YORK CITY BUSINESS BRINGS SAFETY, FUN AND COMMUNITY TO BROOKLYN

Starrett City – Festivities were in the air at Spring Creek Towers in Eastern Brooklyn this past Sunday August 4th. Children and their families gathered on the basketball courts outside the Brooklyn Sports Club on Van Siclen Avenue for the JaffaCares Safety Sunday. There were hundreds of bicycle helmets and over a thousand stove knob safety covers available for residents to collect free of charge.

Mr. Jack Jaffa of Jack Jaffa and Associates who sponsored the day and the giveaways said, “Our mission is all about safety, and this event, just like the others we’ve done before, are the natural outcome of the safety work we do every single day.” State Senator Roxanne Persaud was in attendance as well to show her support for the initiative.

In addition to the giveaways, the NYPD was there registering bikes, and the FDNY had a booth to distribute safety information. A fire truck made an appearance for the children to meet the firemen and to take photos with them and their truck.

The highlight of the day was a high-octane basketball game played with law enforcement and first responders while being coached by the teens of the neighborhood. Mr. Michael Hernandez, formerly of the NYPD and now a local security officer of SCT said of the game, “this was a profound opportunity to be able to interact with the people we’re paid to protect, and the comradery was amazing.”

JaffaCares, the safety-centric philanthropic arm of Jack Jaffa & Associates, creates a wide variety of safety initiatives several times a year, with the next initiative scheduled for Fall.

Spring Creek Towers, Brooklyn NYJack Jaffa & Associates is partnering with Spring Creek Towers Department of Public Safety, the NYPD’s 75th precinct, the FDNY Fire Prevention Bureau and prominent elected officials to bring safety awareness to the 15,000 residents of Starrett City on Sunday, August 4th. The goal of this extraordinary event is to bring critical, life-saving information and material to residents and to foster lasting, positive relationships between residents and law enforcement, which can only help bring even more safety, understanding and respect to our beautiful and diverse communities.

The day will include a variety of safety-focused initiatives, such as free bicycle helmet and stove safety knob distribution to SCT residents, plus fire safety material presentations from the FDNY and bike registration through the 75th Precinct.

The highlight of the event will be a dynamic basketball match involving law enforcement officers and first responders who will be coached by the youth of the Spring Creek Towers Teen Center, providing an unprecedented opportunity for community youth to interact with law enforcement from a reverse and amicable role. In today’s challenging political environment, this initiative will be the catalyst to bring the awareness that we all need to create community, promote safety and foster love, understanding and peace.

Jaffa’s raison d’etre has always been about caring and about safety and JaffaCares is the natural progression of taking the care Jaffa embodies and bringing that to the community and to the individual. Regarding previous JaffaCares initiatives, Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. thanked Jaffa for “doing God’s work” and Councilman Mark Gjonaj expressed his heartfelt sentiments to the press, “as you can see, Jack, you are making a difference in the lives of many”.

This initiative promises to advance Jaffa’s mission of safety and community and serve as a model of how our youth should interact with those in charge of providing for their safety.

As the anniversary of the devastating Belmont fire draws near, NYC officials are looking for ways to prevent such tragedies from occurring again. The fire was caused by a young child accidentally turning on an unprotected stove last year and with the apartment door open, the fire spread rapidly through the building.  The blaze claimed thirteen lives of New York City residents and has left in its wake numerous devastated families. However, at the same time, it may have sparked a new law that will save countless lives, as well as the new JaffaCares initiative, which will help New Yorkers stay safe.

In recent months, the Jaffa Team met with survivors of the tragic fire and was moved by how utterly preventable this tragedy could have been. It was this heart-wrenching meeting combined with laws being proposed by Councilman Torres and Borough President Diaz which propelled the company to take action and create a Stove Safety Initiative as part of their JaffaCares program.

In conjunction with the new law (Local Law 117) that was signed into effect last Thursday, December 6th, JaffaCares was honored and proud to partner with Councilman Torres, Borough President Diaz and 1010WINS last Tuesday, December 4th at a press conference announcing both the new law and the JaffaCares initiative.

The law requires all building owners:

  • To distribute safety covers for stove knobs to tenants with children six years and under.
  • Provide stove knob covers in units without young children if the tenant requests them.
  • Distribute an annual notice to tenants advising them of their right to request stove knob covers and provide safety covers within thirty days of sending the annual notice.
  • Post signs in visible areas regarding fire safety including reminding tenants to close doors if a fire breaks out.

In response to this new law, JaffaCares is supplying these safety covers free of charge to all New York residents.   As New York’s largest compliance consultant firm, Jaffa is committed to making New York City a safer place to live and therefore was excited by the opportunity to implement this life-saving initiative.

Together with Councilman Torres and Borough President Diaz, Jack Jaffa spoke about the importance of the newly drafted law and how safety covers are a small price to pay to keep New York residents safe.   He expressed his honor in being able to play a small part in keeping New Yorkers safe and in preventing fires like last year’s fire from occurring.  He also thanked the councilmen for pushing through this crucial law and for advocating for the safety of their constituents.

The free safety covers were delivered to many NY councilmen allowing them to distribute them to their constituents and many other councilmen have already reached out to Jaffa requesting to be part of the program.  JaffaCares is looking into how they can expand the program and other ways they can continue to keep New Yorkers safe.
