Q: I’ve heard the DSNY will soon be establishing new rules for trash take-out and pickup times. What do I need to know about these rules, and when do they go into place?

JA: Excellent question! In an effort to send the rats of NYC packing, the DSNY has established new rules for trash disposal. These rules go into effect on April 1. Here’s a quick overview of the new trash disposal rules:

For residential buildings:

  1. Place the trash in a secure container at the curb after 6 PM and no later than 12 AM.
  2. Place the trash directly on the curb after 8 PM and no later than 12 AM.
For commercial buildings:
  1. Put trash bags directly on the curb after 8 PM if putting bags directly on the curb.
  2. Place trash in a secure container one hour before closing.
